It’s the day many Edmonton commuters have been dreading — Walterdale Hill closed to traffic at 9 a.m. for construction of the new Walterdale Bridge.

The closure, which remains in effect until Aug. 4, is expected to create traffic congestion on 109th Street and Saskatchewan Drive.

The city is advising drivers to take 99th Street/Scona Road or Groat Road as alternate routes.

They can also take Queen Elizabeth Park Drive to get across the old Walterdale Bridge which will still remain open.

The 9 and 197 bus routes will take Saskatchewan Drive and Queen Elizabeth Park Road to get downtown.

Crews will spend the summer realigning Walterdale Hill Road as well as finishing construction of concrete blocks that will support the bridge arches.

The new bridge is scheduled to open by late 2015.
