One day after an Edmonton police dog was stabbed to death by a suspect who fled a stolen vehicle, the Edmonton Police Service has spoken out in favour of harsher laws for criminals who kill police dogs.

However, New Mexico resident Susie Jean told CBC’s Travis McEwan the Edmonton dog shouldn’t have died in the first place.

Jean runs a non-profit organization that provides police dogs in the U.S. with vests that protect them from being stabbed or shot.

Now, Jean said she plans on getting in touch with EPS about donating some of the protective vests to Canadian dogs.
