Two men face charges after an Edmonton Transit bus driver was attacked Wednesday night in the city’s west end.

ETS security called police about a driver being attacked at 87 Avenue and 159 Street around 11 p.m.

The men attacked the driver after he asked them to get off the bus for refusing to pay the fare, said police.

The pair fled to a nearby gas station and took a taxi cab to the Callingwood area where they again took off without paying their fare.

Police dogs tracked the two to a nearby residence at 67 Avenue and 170 Street.

Two men were arrested and face numerous charges including resisting arrest.

The bus driver was not hurt.

"This was very good police work by responding members and K-9 considering the circumstances, and we are thankful for all of the assistance that we received from Edmonton Transit, the taxi cab company, and witnesses," said Staff Sgt. Dale Fenrich.

A man who attacked an Edmonton Transit driver in December 2009 is facing a dangerous offender hearing this week.

Gary Mattson, 25, pleaded guilty in May to aggravated assault after stomping on Tom Bregg's head 15 times.
