Fire officials say the fire at the Surrey Gardens townhouse complex on Wednesday caused $3 million in damages, double the original estimate.
The fire broke out around 12:41 p.m. at the building located at 178th Street and 69th Avenue. Twelve of the 24 units sustained substantial fire and water damage.
The cause of the fire is still not known because damage was so extensive, said Laura Ruddock from Edmonton Fire Rescue.
“The investigation is going to take them a little bit of time for them to go through thoroughly and try to determine first the point of origin and what the cause was,” she said.
One person suffered smoke inhalation and minor burns to his arms. One cat is still missing.
