Tip sheet for bank complaints

What to do if you have a complaint with your bank.

What to do if you have a complaint with your bank:

  1. Talk to representative at your local branch. If that doesn’t help ask to speak to the branch manager.
  2. If the branch manager can’t help, say you want to speak to someone higher up, and ask who that is. Every bank will refer you to a senior manager to hear your concern.
  3. If you’re still not happy ask for the bank’s ombudsman.
  4. If you still feel your complaint hasn’t been properly addressed, contact the independent ombudsman for your bank. There are two, and who you call depends on who you bank with. The information can be found at the Canadian Bankers’ Association website.

If you deal with ATB Financial and can’t resolve your complaint with them contact the Office of the Alberta Ombudsman in Edmonton at 780-427-2756 or 1-888-455-2756

If you deal with a credit union, your last avenue of appeal is through Alberta Treasury Board and Finance
