A 17-year-old girl was struck and killed by a train near Wabamun, Alta. early Wednesday morning.

RCMP say the teen was struck around 2 a.m. when she became separated from a group that was walking with her.

CN spokesperson Jim Feeny said that the freight train was travelling around 56 km/hr at the time.

“There's nothing the crew could have done to prevent this accident,” he said.

“It's impossible to stop a freight train quickly. Again a tragic reminder that people should not be on train tracks.”

The girl was dead at the scene.

An engineer and a conductor were operating the train. CN is offering the crew counselling on Wednesday.
