The 31-year-old man wanted in the fatal hit and run that killed a father of two last Friday has spent the past 12 years in and out of jail.

Police are searching for Jonathan Jake Cardinal, who is wanted on Canada-wide arrests for manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and theft over $5,000.

Adam Groves, 33, was killed on June 13 trying to stop a thief from stealing his blue 2006 Dodge Ram truck outside his Rundle Park home. Police were already chasing the suspect when the man stole the vehicle.

Cardinal has no fixed address, at least 35 criminal convictions and has spent the past 12 years in and out of jail.

His long list of criminal offences range from petty theft to sexual assault.

In 2012, Cardinal was sentenced to 15 months in jail for multiple offences, including failing to stop and evading police.

He went to jail three on three other occasions for failing to stop and evading police.

Cardinal also had to register as a sex offender for breaking into a house and sexually assaulting someone in 2005.

There was a warrant for Cardinal’s arrest at the time he allegedly killed Groves.

Police believe Cardinal is still in Edmonton but warn that he should not be approached as he is considered to be a danger to the public.
