An Edmonton police officer fired for lying about her affair with a superior may get her job back.
Alberta's Law Enforcement Review Board overturned Const. Janice Fitzgerald's firing last October on a count of discreditable conduct.
A disciplinary hearing determined Fitzgerald had not been honest with investigators from the professional standards branch about her relationship with a now-retired superior, who she has since married.
The 18-page decision released this week concludes Fitzgerald should get her job back, substituted by a 40-hour suspension and a reprimand.
The head of the police union is urging the force to reinstate the constable as soon as possible.
Edmonton Police can still appeal Thursday's decision.
Fitzgerald's firing became controversial when five days later an officer who used a Taser stun gun eight times on a teenager who was passed out in the back seat of a car was suspended for only 120 hours.
Chief Rod Knecht said he recommended termination in the Fitzgerald case on the basis that the adjudicator found that she was deceitful.
