City roads will get $12 million in extra money for pothole repairs.

City transportation officials called this winter the worst in five years for potholes.

Today Mayor Stephen Mandel said rapid city growth and a particularly troublesome winter are to blame for this year's pothole problem.

“If you look at this winter — we’ve had freezing and thawing, freezing and thawing way more than any other year,” said Mandel, “and we have had a little more snow than normal. It creates havoc.”

“It’s not our intention to create a pothole ... but it is a fact of life in our city,” said Mandel. “It will be there forever and we’ll never catch up.”

But that doesn’t mean the city hasn’t been trying, said Mandel.

“It is an area that council is trying very hard to fix... through the close to $2 billion we spend on roads.”

Mandel says crews will get started on repairs as soon as weather permits.
