A youth worker and a lawyer are apologizing to police Chief Rod Knecht four weeks after criticizing the Edmonton city police for failing to properly assist the victim of a suspected sexual assault victim.

The 18-year-old Edmonton woman claims she was drugged and raped at a west-end motel on Feb. 17.

She told CBC News she was taken to jail on outstanding warrants instead of the hospital.

Youth worker Mark Cherrington add defence lawyer Parm Johal were highly critical of how police handled the case, but Monday they admitted they jumped to conclusions and embarrassed the police.

The police chief has publicly accepted the apology.

"I think folks didn't have all the facts and went forward with some opinions and it just grew from there," Knecht said. "We've made mistakes in the past, we'll make mistakes in the future.

"And when we make mistakes, we'll come forward and admit to those mistakes. But this was not one of those occasions."

The sexual assault investigation continues, but so far no charges have been laid, Knecht said.
