AMA head Dr. Michael Giuffre wants the premier to get directly involved in the pay negotiations with physicians. (CBC)The head of the Alberta Medical Association wants Premier Alison Redford to get involved in its pay dispute with the province.
AMA President Dr. Michael Giuffre said Redford should table a government position as both sides try to negotiate a new contract for Alberta physicians.
We would like to see if that helps move us along like it obviously did with the teachers, and we would like that same consideration,” he said.
On Friday Alberta teachers reached a tentative contract deal after Redford weighed in on the protracted negotiations.
Speaking to reporters Saturday after meeting with AMA members about the impact of the provincial budget on doctors, Giuffre also said it’s time for the pay dispute to go to arbitration.
Earlier this week third-party mediators recommended arbitration, but Health Minister Fred Horne said he is not in favour of that.
