Wearing kilts and white shirts, Alberta's super fans, The Sociables, were prominently on display among the almost 10,000 people in the crowd at the opening day of the Canadian men's curling championship at Rexall Place Saturday.

"We have a good time. We cheer on curling. We cheer on great shots," said Nathan Woynarski.

They aren't just a colourful addition to the curling crowd. They also inject some youth into the usually older fans of the Brier.

Another member of The Sociables, Richard Yacyshen, curls recreationally, and he said coming to the Brier made him appreciate curling even more.

"Oh my God, it is the Canadian sport. Everyone is absolutely friendly, and you feel the love in the air," Yacyshen said.

Woynarski said they aren't just an Alberta cheering squad. They just want to see the best team represent Canada at the world championships March 20 in Victoria, B.C.

"It's Canadian pride through and through [that's] why we're here. It's Canada's national championships. This is what it's all about for curling," Woynarski said

However, he said, they won't be wearing the kilts every day

"We're wearing kilts today, and we're gonna wear kilts the last day. In between that we're gonna wear something else. Every single day, we got a different costume," he said.

Just what they will be wearing is secret for now.

"Absolutely, the day of when it happens we'll let you know, because we'll be wearing it," he said.

Alberta skip and hometown favourite Kevin Martin lost to Manitoba's Jeff Stoughton 5-4 in Saturday night's game.

The Brier ends next Sunday.
