A historic hotel in Sedgewick, Alta. burned to the ground overnight.

Firefighters were still putting out hot spots Friday of what remained of the 97-year-old Pioneer Hotel.

Firefighters say the building went up in flames quickly.

"It was too dangerous to send somebody inside the building, so went on defensive position," said district fire chief Kim Cannady.

"So basically from that point on, we decided we were just going to contain the fire to the building of origin ... just stop it from spreading to other buildings."

People who live in the town of close to 900 say they've lost a social hub.

"Really a sad day for the town," said Randy Mikkelson. "And it's a meeting place. Everybody goes there. Wing nights on Wednesdays. It's going to be sadly missed."

The cause of the fire still hasn’t been determined. Fire investigators will start sifting through the debris on Saturday.
