Series of crashes closes downtown Edmonton for 8 hours

A driver slammed into a number of cars after hitting a taxi and a police car in downtown Edmonton. He was later charged with impaired driving and criminal hit and run. (CBC)

A 25-year-old man is facing drunk-driving and hit-and-run charges after a series of crashes in central Edmonton early Friday morning.
The carnage began around 3 a.m. when an SUV hit a taxi on 106th Avenue at 101st Street.
Four blocks later the speeding SUV sideswiped a police cruiser before driving off on the wrong side of the road and slamming into three parked vehicles between 96th and 97th Streets.
The SUV stopped and the driver fled, but was caught by officers a short distance away.
The taxi driver and the two officers involved were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Ironically the officers were transporting an impaired driver to the downtown division station at the time.
The area was closed to traffic for approximately eight hours while the police investigated the collisions and debris was cleared.
The man remains in police custody.
