More than 300 people filled a west Edmonton church on Friday for the funeral of Agnes Morgan, the 77-year-old woman who was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver earlier this week.
Morgan was in a marked crosswalk only a block and a half from home when she was hit by a pickup truck on Monday afternoon. She died several hours later at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.
“It was an absolutely senseless tragedy, the family is obviously in shock,” said her nephew, Doug Allan.
Doug Allan said his aunt Agnes Morgan was kind-hearted and energetic. (CBC)“She was a kind-hearted, vibrant, energetic woman who gave of herself with no thoughts of getting anything back.”
Morgan was remembered as a tireless volunteer who donated her time to sitting on church committees, helping the food bank and delivering hats and mittens to groups that help the homeless.
“She was an energetic person,” said Rev. Jo-Anne Kobylka, the minister at Ebenezer United Church.
“She would give her time to any person that she’d meet. Even a stranger on the streets. She was on the go all the time.”
Don Mayne and John Wright both knew her through her work with the church.
“We’re going to miss her very much,” Mayne said. “A person like that is hard to replace because they know so many people and do so many things and don’t brag about it.”
Wright called her a remarkable person who was quiet and unassuming.
“She was there every time in her own quiet way, just doing what was right for her and for the group she was with and we’ll remember her forever for that,” he said.
Morgan leaves behind a husband, two children, a grandchild and four siblings.
Sivakumar Devarajah, 53, is charged with impaired driving causing death and driving with a blood-alcohol level over .08 causing death.
He was released on bail after a court appearance on Friday.
