Agnes Morgan, 77, was identified by friends on Tuesday as the woman who died after she was struck by a suspected drunk driver in west Edmonton.

"What a wonderful, wonderful lady," said Kay Quon who served with Morgan on a number of committees at Ebenezer United Church.

"She was such a genuine person," she said. "She's just such a wonderful role model of someone who deeply cared in the things that she did.

"She was just herself — just Agnes."

Quon believes Morgan was likely coming home from a meeting when she was hit by a pickup truck while crossing 156th Street at 110th Avenue Monday afternoon.

"It meant that she died probably, well as they say, with her boots on," said Quon. "She died being busy."

Struck while in marked crosswalk

Morgan was crossing 156th Street, a busy west-end road, in a marked crosswalk when she was hit by the truck making a left turn onto the street from 110th Avenue at around 3:20 p.m.. She died several hours later at Royal Alexandra Hospital.

On Tuesday friends and church members met at the church to pray for her.

"Sad news for sure," said retired minister Jo-Ann Wilson Symonds. "I was very upset. I couldn't believe it when her husband told me.

"We will miss her. And a lot of people will."

Morgan was quiet, kind, patient and passionate about her work with the United Church women's group, Wilson Symonds said.

"She was the splendid example of how we all should be."

Sivakumar Devarajah, 53, is charged with impaired driving causing death and driving with a blood-alcohol level over .08 causing death.

Devarajah appeared in court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody. The death is the city's first traffic fatality of 2013.
