Woman dies in head-on collision with Athabasca Aces hockey bus

A 23-year-old woman is dead after a serious collision Sunday morning on Highway 2 just south of Athabasca, Alta.
Athabasca RCMP Sgt. Brian Scott said the woman was driving a pickup truck southbound at about 2:20 a.m. MT, when she crossed the centre line and struck a northbound community bus carrying a local hockey team.
The 23-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her 23-year-old male passenger was critically injured and was taken to hospital in Athabasca before being transferred to an Edmonton-area hospital. Police said he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
None of the eight Athabasca Aces men's north central league hockey players were injured. The driver of the bus received minor injuries, police said.
The cause of the collision is being investigated, but weather may be a factor.
Police said the highway was covered with snow at the time of the collision, and that alcohol has not yet been ruled out as a factor.
