A 41-year-old Edmonton man stabbed three weeks ago died in hospital over the weekend.

Jeffery Thomas, who was 40 at the time of the attack, was stabbed just after 11 p.m. on Jan. 3 near 117th Avenue and 127th Street.

Witnesses told police Thomas had been arguing with another man in the residence prior to the stabbing.

The two men were known to each other and the assault is not believed to be random, said police.

The 35-year-old suspect was stopped by a patrol car several blocks from the scene. He was charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon.

Police are now upgrading the charges to second-degree murder.

This is the second homicide in Edmonton for 2013.
