About 130 workers at the Symphony Senior Living care home in Red Deer are on strike. (CBC)
Some employees at the Symphony Senior Living Aspen Ridge care home in Red Deer are on the picket line after negotiations with their employer broke down on the weekend.
About 130 staff members are on strike including nurses, health-care aides and support staff.
The private company which owns the home, Symphony Senior Living, has brought in replacement workers to take care of the residents.
Pam Williamson’s 79-year-old mother lives in the home and has Alzheimer's disease.
"The idea of other people taking care of her right now, even though she might not recognize them, they're not going to know what her needs are," said Williamson.
"Her medication, is she going to get it on time? Is it going to be the right meds? I am really concerned about all of this."
Complaint filed
The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees has filed a complaint of bargaining in bad with the Alberta Labour Relations Board.
The union says the employer wants the authority to fire an employee without cause.
Symphony Living says it refuses to compromise the quality of care and safety by guaranteeing work to under-performing staff.
A hearing has been set for Friday.
