Workers over 55 nearly half of Alberta labour force

Nearly half of Alberta's workforce is now made up of people who are 55 or over, an increase from the 1990s when the total was below 30 per cent.
The increase is partly due to the fact that people are healthier and living longer, according to Todd Hirsch, senior economist with ATB Financial.
But he adds that financial difficulties may keep them in workforce longer.
“It could be that their savings were hit during that 2008 and 2009 downturn. They might be finding that Alberta is an expensive place to live,” Hirsch said.
“They might be finding that their retirement plan is now insufficient for them and some of them are having to go back to the workforce to continue working just to be able to make ends meet.”
