Online voting recommended for 2013 municipal election

A new city report recommends that Edmonton offer internet voting in this fall's municipal election.
The city tested the technology last fall by holding a mock election where participants voted for their favourite colour of jellybean.
A 17-person citizen jury evaluated the outcome and recommended that the city should go ahead.
The report notes that the security system was able to foil hacker attacks on the registration and voting systems. The system was also able to detect attempts by some participants to register more than once.
"Administration believes that the security and protection of this voting system meets expectations and requirements," the report states.
City councillors will consider the recommendations at next Wednesday's meeting.
The province would have to amend the Local Authorities Election Act to allow internet voting.
