The number of Albertans getting a flu shot has jumped in the past week but officials would like to see the number go higher.
Alberta Health Services delivered nearly 11,000 doses of flu vaccine between Jan. 6 and 12, compared to 4,200 doses between Dec. 30 and Jan. 5.
Dr. Marcia Johnson, a provincial medical officer of health, is still concerned about the vaccination rate in Alberta.
"Influenza does enter our communities each year and causes a tremendous amount of illness and emergency visits, doctors’ visits, hospitalizations and death. A great proportion of that is preventable with immunization," said Dr. Johnson.
AHS says as of Jan. 12, only 466,000 Albertans have received a flu shot.
