Unusually warm temperatures may have turned the city’s streets into a slushy mess, but that hasn’t stopped many Edmontonians from enjoying the break from the winter cold.

"You know it is what it is and it's a nice time of year. It's the middle of January and its so beautiful...take in the niceness," said Kristine Sawchuck.

However, even though she enjoys the pleasant weather, she says it does make her job at a gas station a bit more difficult.

"You have to chip and you have to shovel and you have to get everything away, because the puddles start,” she said.

“And then when it's late at night, it cools down and you get a skating rink. So you gotta do what you gotta do."

Temperatures reached a high of eight degrees Tuesday, putting Edmonton’s weather on par with places like Las Vegas.

The city says the weather did not change its plans to remove windrows from Edmonton streets, although the slushy roads did slow down the job.

"With another day of warm temperatures, the snow storage sites are starting to soften up a little bit which means the trucks are having to go a little bit slower through the sites there,” said Bob Dunford, director of roadway maintenance.

“So that could slow us down at the dumping end of the snow."

The warm weather is not expected to last, with temperatures set to sink again this weekend.
