Speed played a role in more than half of the fatal crashes in Edmonton last year, according to numbers released by police on Friday.

Ot the 29 traffic fatalities in 2012, 57 per cent involved speed and 35 per cent involved an impaired driver.

"We're recording ridiculous speeds in this town," said Sgt. Gary Lamont from the Major Collision Investigation Unit. "Ridiculous —111 km/h in a 50 kilometre zone in the downtown area? That is crazy."

Police point to recent incidents that could have ended tragically.

Just after midnight on Dec. 31 photo radar captured the driver of a Nissan Altima travelling 61 km/h over the posted limit near 105th Street and 97th Avenue.

On Thursday, Jan. 3 a truck was caught on photo radar travelling 66 km/h over the posted speed limit at 12:52 p.m. near Gateway Boulevard and Ellerslie Road .

Police Chief Rod Knecht has called for vehicles of excessive speeders to be seized, saying they pose a significant threat to the public.
