An Edmonton family is so determined to find their two missing dogs that they've offered a $3,000 reward and brought in an animal trapper to help with the search.

Buddy the labrador retriever and Maddy the bulldog wandered away from the Baird family's rural property in north Edmonton last Saturday.

"As you can see, the door doesn't always latch, so Buddy came up here, pushed open the door," Carmel Baird said. "Out he went, took the bulldog with him."

In addition to the reward, the Bairds have also convinced dozens of people to help with the search, as well as posting a video on YouTube, featuring footage of Buddy and Maddy.

The family is concerned about their pets' welfare as they live close to a wooded area next to the North Saskatchewan River.

"Whatever it takes is what we're going to do to get them back," Carmel Baird said. "If there's anyway that they're still alive and they're still out there, then I'm just willing to go to whatever lengths I can to bring them home."

The family also took the unusual step of contacting animal tracker Bill Abercrombie, who offered to help out for free.

Abercrombie plans to look for tracks in his search for what may have driven the dogs away from the area but he says that could be challenging.

"Whatever sign that was left by the dogs on Saturday, I'm sure is going to be compromised significantly," he said.

The family hasn't given up hope and says that they will still keep looking for their pets.
