Building owners with fire alarm systems will face higher fines for false alarms in the new year.

“I think there was a pretty cavalier attitude in the last decade and so since 2010 we realized, well, here's a strategy, it seems to be working,“ said Fire marshall Rusty Foerger.

Starting January 1st, fines for a second time offence will more than triple to $300. That fine doubles for the third offence.

A fourth offence will costs a total of $1,200.

Foerger says first time offences will get a warning and that the fines are only for calls due to faulty alarm systems - good faith alarms that end up not being fires will not be fined.

“Sometimes people aren't aware of what this does for an emergency call,” said Foeger.

“Because every time we're on the road, well, we are putting people's lives in danger. Big trucks in a hurry going to an emergency. “

He says trucks responding to false alarms are trucks that can’t respond if a real fire breaks out at the same time.
