Edmonton police have found a vehicle thought to be involved in a police shootout last night.
Police were searching for a light-blue Toyota 4-Runner after an officer was shot at during a traffic stop Sunday night.
“Our officers were shot at. We have a lot of resources at our disposal. And we will do what we can to identify the individual responsible and bring them to justice," said Deputy Chief Brian Simpson.
Simpson says four officers were in the area when police pulled over the SUV at 100th Avenue and 158th Street around 9:20 p.m.
He would only say it was "an anomaly" that caused police to pull the SUV over and that the vehicle wasn't stolen.
When one of the police officers exited his car, the driver allegedly shot at him.
The suspect then fled while police returned fire.
“This happened very quickly. We’re not talking minutes, we are talking seconds,” Simpson said.
Neither of the officers was injured, and it isn’t known if the driver or a female passenger in the vehicle were hit.
Police say the suspect was a Caucasian male, around 25, with spiked hair. The vehicle was found not far from the shooting.
Simpson says police are still investigating and are asking for the public's help in the case.
"We do know that there were witnesses out there.”
He says Alberta's Serious Incident Response Team, which investigates police shootings, has been notified but is not involved in the investigation.
