People who wanted to celebrate Christmas by skating at Hawrelak Park are out of luck.

Skaters will have to wait at least another week because heavy wet snow has prevented the pond from forming an ice layer thick enough to support a plow and water truck used to clear and flood the surface.

"Snow is an insulation," said Barry Lozinsky, supervisor, River Valley, Parks and Cemetery Operations for the city. "Cold air doesn't go down through the snow. That's the problem.".

City crews had been using snowblowers and brooms to clear the surface while the ice was too thin for the plow. However, their progress has been slow since they need to clear five hectares.

Once the surface is clear and the ice is thick enough to support a water truck, crews can start the flooding needed to get the ice ready for skaters.

"You're not talking about a little backyard rink," Lazinsky said. "This is a massive job and a great amount of weight on this ice."

Skaters shouldn't despair. The Victoria Park Oval has already opened for the season as have the outdoor rinks at Jackie Parker Park, Castle Downs and city hall.

The rink at Rundle Park is scheduled to open on Friday.
