Edmonton's Crisis Support Centre is shutting down its walk-in counselling service next month due to uncertainty over funding.

"We have struggled over the last two years to balance our budget due to stagnant core funding and a challenging fundraising environment," said executive director Nancy McCalder in a media release. "We can no longer operate programs hoping we will raise enough funds to keep them operational throughout the year."

McCalder said the walk-in clinic which helped 780 people in 2011 has operated over the past 15 years from grant to grant, resulting in inconsistent service.

The agency said it takes some solace that other agencies in Edmonton provide similar services including the City of Edmonton, The Family Centre, and the Salvation Army.

The Crisis Support Centre will now focus on its 24-hour Distress Line.
