Edmonton city council is reviewing a large apartment development planned for the city's south side Malmo neighbourhood that has many area residents up in arms.
Westcorp Development wants to build four apartment buildings, each up to eight storeys tall, and seven multi-storey townhouses - a total of 508 units on the two-and-a-half hectare plot near 51st Ave and 117th Street.
Malmo Community League member Mary Jane Turnell says many feel the project is too high density for the area.
“This is not downtown and we see this kind of density downtown, but not normally in the neighbourhoods. Infill for infill sake is not not good urban planning in our view,” she said. The city administration is recommending that councillors approve the plan.
Turnell said people are hoping use Monday’s hearing to convince them otherwise.
“I know everyone will call it NIMBY-ism but it isn't really because we realize, and many support it, development on this particular piece of land.
So it's not a case of NIMBY what we wanted was a nice reasonable plan that was balanced in terms of numbers, density, height.”
