Mayor Stephen Mandel came down hard on Edmonton transit officials this morning for removing parking spots beside city bus stops.

"We need to be much more business conscious about when we do things," he said. "What are the implications?"

Mandel points to several locations downtown where 15-minute parking signs or parking meters adjacent to bus stops have been removed, but says it's happening all over the city.

He said he wonders why bus drivers need this extra space around the stops.

Mandel says it's not something that affects him because as mayor he can park anywhere, but worries about seniors or people wanting to pop into a corner store.

"Understanding about business and the impact of things that we do as a city needs to be of primary importance when we make these decisions," he said.

Mandel asked staff for a report outlining the rationale for the removal of the parking spaces.
