The eastbound lanes of Highway 16 were closed for an hour Tuesday afternoon after what RCMP described as a serious crash about 24 kilometres west of Stony Plain.

A pickup truck and a gravel truck collided at Range Road 33 and Highway 16, east of the Wabamun turn-off. Police say both vehicles were heading east at the time.

The 25-year-old male driver of the pickup had to be removed from his vehicle by the Wabamun Fire Department. He was flown to hospital in Edmonton by STARS air ambulance. The extent of his injuries was not known.

The highway has now reopened.
