The city is cutting down the elms on the median on Whyte Avenue between 96th and 99th Streets, beginning this week.

The trees are in ill health from pollution and infestation by pests, while nearing the end of their natural life cycle.

Many of these trees have become unstable.

“Removing these trees is a significant loss to all of us, they are such an important part of the Whyte Ave landscape,” said city forester Jeannette Wheeler in a news release.

“Unfortunately, these trees are in declining health. We are committed to rejuvenating the planting area and replanting these trees.”

While 31 trees have been identified for removal, more may be added to the list during the pruning process.

The city removed about 20 of the elms in 2010, hoping it could save the rest.
