Conservative MPs from Alberta will still be allowed to attend provincial Tory conventions, but they’ll have to follow a new set of rules.

At the provincial party’s annual general meeting in Calgary this weekend, delegates decided to keep a rule that allows MPs to attend and vote at provincial Conservative conventions.

“I think it’s a good approach,” said Premier Alison Redford.

“I know that people have distinct views with respect to this. I'm always very happy to have our members of Parliament participating.”

Some provincial Tories were upset earlier this year when several Conservative MPs helped the Wildrose Party during the spring election.

Under the new rules, MPs can still come to the provincial meetings, but are no longer allowed to bring 15 voting delegates with them.

Redford says very few MPs actually come to the conventions, but it is important to keep the lines of communication open.

“It's important for dialogue and I think it's a very mature approach to what we needed to deal with.”

Government will balance budget: Redford

In a speech to delegates, Redford again committed to delivering a balanced budget next year.

Critics have raised doubt, pointing to lower-than-expected oil prices and increased infrastructure spending as reasons that the plan is unrealistic.

Redford says it might mean trying different approaches.

“We've made it very clear that if everything that we do right now is funded fully with cash in the bank, then we're never going to build anything again in this province.”

“We know that it's going to be possible to use [public-private partnership] approaches and to talk to people that want to make investments in this province to help us build infrastructure projects.”

The convention continues through Sunday.
