A lower-cost proposal to upgrade Commonwealth Stadium for the Women's World Cup of Soccer in 2015 is getting panned by the mayor.
"I think we have tremendous facilities at Commonwealth now which we just built — I'm not sure why we can't use some of those."
Council is considering renovating the stadium with new dressing rooms, medical rooms, referee areas and a doping-control space.
A proposal presented last month would have cost almost $20 million, but city staff cut that price tag to about $10 million.
Mayor Stephen Mandel said it's still too much.
"$10 million is a fair chunk of money," he said. "The new Commonwealth Recreation Centre's got gorgeous locker rooms. "It's like a six-second walk. Plus ... the Eskimos visitors have almost two locker rooms there and can't we use both of those?"
City council will debate the upgrades Wednesday.
