A drug bust at two Edmonton homes and a storage locker in Sherwood Park yielded drugs, guns and a live grenade, say Edmonton police.

Police began investigating a cocaine trafficking ring in September, said Det. Kevin Berge, with the Drug and Gang Enforcement Unit.

Police searched the homes — one near 90th Street and Jasper Avenue, the other at 42nd Street and 139th Avenue — last Thursday and seized:

  • 2011 Ford Taurus with sophisticated hidden compartments
  • Approximately 2.5 kilograms of cocaine with a wholesale value of $156,000 and street value of $250,000
  • Approximately 10 ounces of Ecstasy with a wholesale value of $12,000 and street value of $30,000
  • Drug trafficking paraphernalia
  • Sig Sauer 9mm handgun
  • Taurus 9mm handgun
  • 9mm ammunition

A live hand grenade with an improvised detonator was also seized, said Berge.

"In the last eight years of being in the gang unit, this would be the first time I would have encountered a grenade," he said.

Police don't know the origin of the grenade, though it seems to be from an earlier generation of grenades than what the military currently uses, he said.

Police believe the the drugs were destined for eastern Canada.

"Edmonton is a hub for a lot of areas," Berge said.

A 29-year-old man is facing numerous weapon and trafficking charges.
