Parking fines may soon be going up in Edmonton.

The city says it's seen a 65 per cent increase in expired parking meter violations. The city wants more turnover at meters to allow more people to use businesses in the area.

The current penalty is $35, but that could go up $50.

Other cities in Canada charge upward of $70, said city staff.

The city is also looking at raising the fine for parking illegally in one of the 25 neighbourhoods requiring a permit from $50 to $75.

Other parking tickets are expected to go up as well.

The hikes will be debated by city councillors next week and could come into affect in January.
