An 8-year-old boy who survived a two-car crash on Highway 63 Sunday remains in critical condition after surgery Monday night.

Jayden Germain was in a car driven by his grandmother, Juliette Germain, 52, when they were struck by another car as they turned onto the highway near Wandering River south of Fort McMurray.

Juliette Germain was killed.

Her brother, Aurele Germain, told CBC News Tuesday morning that Jaydon is still on life support.

"They installed a brain tube in his head to reduce some fluid pressure on his brain," he said. "He's still in critical condition. He doesn't have any broken bones though."

Grandmother was well-liked waitress

His sister, a mother of five, worked at Denny's restaurant on Baseline Road in Sherwood Park east of Edmonton, Germain said.

"She worked all her life as a waitress and she was good at what she did," he said.

"When they got the news...apparently it was silent for about 15 minutes in the restaurant," he said. "She touched lots of people's hearts and they liked her."

Germain said the family was on the way to church Sunday in different vehicles when the accident happened.

His father passed the second vehicle and a moment later saw the crash in his rearview mirror, he said.

Brother came upon crash scene

"Within five minutes I was there," said Germain, a former volunteer firefighter at Wandering River. "I realized it was my sister that was involved. I was really shocked.

"I did what I could. I covered her up with a blanket and attended to the other guy in the other vehicle."

He said he quit the fire department because he could no longer respond to crashes on the busy highway, he said.

"I just don't have the system for stuff like that."

His sister was in Wandering River for a family reunion, said Germain.

"We're a close family so we'll pull through," he said.

A 28-year-old passenger in the second car also died, while the 26-year-old driver is in hospital with life-threatening injuries.
