New details have emerged about incidents that prompted the University of Alberta to change how alcohol is consumed in the Lister Hall student residences.

The changes, implemented by university administration this year, include a ban on alcohol consumption in common areas, allowing students to drink only in their rooms.

Students' Union president Colten Yamagishi says administration cited a number of incidents over the past decade as a reason for the change, including reports of residents having another student drink vomit and one man having his pelvic area lit on fire.

"These types of events have since been addressed numerous years ago," Yamagishi said.

The new rules concern students who live in Lister Hall.

"I think they're more dangerous than the old rules,” said second-year student Kaitlyn Muse. “Before when you were socializing and drinking with more people, those people had your back."

Yamagishi says the university broke bylaws which state that the administration must work with student leaders on changes like the ones at Lister Hall.

Yamagishi says he is meeting with officials on Thursday.

“If the university will not abide by the contracts it has with the Students' Union, what stops them from overruling these decisions on big issues like tuition?” he said.
