Music fans with tickes to Symphony Under the Sky in Hawrelak Park will have to enjoy the show inside Saturday, as the festival has moved indoors because of bad weather.
“It was a tough one. We haven’t had to move Symphony under the Sky into the Winspear for, I think this will be eight years now,” said Annemarie Petrov, executive director of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.
Petrov said organizers have been watching the weather since early Saturday morning, hoping the rain wouldn't hit during the symphony’s afternoon and evening performances.
But it soon became apparent, she said, that a thunderstorm would likely settle over the city right as the evening show started.
“A lot of people are very disappointed … but I think an equal number will be very relieved.”
Petrov said moving the shows indoors will mean some ticket-holders may not be able to see the show on Saturday.
“We can handle up to 1,900 people inside the Winspear and we can handle about 2,400 to 2,500 inside the park,” she said.
The festival sells normal tickets until they reach the capacity of the Winspear. Petrov said tickets sold above that number are marked with the words “Valid at Hawrelak Park Only” so that people know they won’t be able to see the performance if it moves indoors.
Petrov said the invalid tickets will be refunded after the festival.
Organizers are hopeful the weather will allow them to hold outdoor performances on Sunday and Monday.
