The Edmonton Police Service has added six more beat officers along Jasper Avenue to respond to the increasing number of bars and businesses opening up along the downtown strip.

"I certainly feel or like to believe that people feel safer taking their dog for a walk if they live down here," said Const. Mike Bates.

"I hope that they feel comfortable now that they know there's a police presence down here that they can go ahead and do that and feel safer doing that than they may have felt a couple of years ago."

The Edmonton crime map shows four robberies and 10 assaults along Jasper Avenue in the past three months. But the officers aren't just reacting to crime.

They are trying to be proactive by making contacts and discouraging would-be criminals through their presence on the street.

"A lot of times that visibility acts as a deterrent," said Const. Dale McDonald.
