Learning the difference between "walk" and "don't walk" may save pedestrians in downtown Edmonton $250.

Bylaw officers are launching education blitz around Churchill Square in light of the new school year starting.

While some jaywalkers are getting warnings, others are getting $250 tickets.

Officers are targeting the area because there are so many pedestrians who cross when they shouldn't, said city spokesperson Laura McNabb

"It isn't worth risking your life for the couple of seconds that you are going to save dashing across that intersection," she said.

Some pedestrians are unaware the countdown signal doesn't mean you should rush to cross, but rather you must wait until the next walk light to cross, she said.

The ticketing education blitz will continue until the end of the week.
