A 33-year-old man is dead following a shooting in downtown Edmonton late Monday afternoon.

Police confirmed that a man was shot several times in the abdomen around 4 p.m. Monday. The shots were fired behind Joey’s on Jasper Avenue and 113th Street.

Police said shots rang out during a dispute between two groups of people in a parking lot.

"At some point in the disturbance, shots were fired at one of the groups, striking one of the males in the abdomen area," said Insp. Joel Whittaker of the Edmonton Police Service. "The shooter ran in the westbound area and we're looking for his whereabouts."

Greg Titmarsh said he heard five gunshots and went to investigate.

"I heard bang bang bang bang bang ... and then all of a sudden I heard screaming over at the corner of the building and there was a guy lying in the middle of the road bleeding to death from his abdomen, his girlfriend was laying down on the ground jumping up and screaming those guys, those guys," he said.

The man who was shot was assisted by an off-duty nurse and paramedic who were in the area. Police and EMS treated him at the scene and then he was transported to hospital. He died several hours later, police said.

Two men were seen fleeing the scene in a black SUV.

The empty suspect vehicle was found by police a short time later.
