A couple of prop guns used in a film shoot caused police to briefly clear out a building on the University of Alberta campus Sunday afternoon.
Inspect. Brian Nolan says the paintball gun and Airsoft rifle were not brandished in a threatening manner. (CBC News)People were evacuated from the Students’ Union Building around 3 p.m. after reports of someone possibly carrying an assault rifle on campus.
Police blocked off the areas around the building while officers went in to investigate.
They eventually determined that the weapons students spotted were a paintball rifle and an airsoft gun, said Inspect. Brian Nolan.
“It was never displayed in a threatening matter. But certainly in light of things going on in the world today, we’re certainly not isolated from that sort of thing here in Edmonton,“ he said.
Later, the University of Alberta twitter account posted a message saying the guns were being used for a film being shot in the building’s basement.
The university’s emergency alert system was not activated during the incident.
