Firefighters were called to a home in west Edmonton Monday afternoon after a gas line caught on fire.

A contractor was repairing an underground power line near 199th St. and 69th Avenue around 3 p.m. when a propane torch ignited a gas leak.

One house was extensively damaged after it caught on fire. An adjacent house sustained water damage.

The contractor was assessed by EMS and released, said District Fire Chief Dave Matwichk said. A resident was home at the time but was able to escape without injury

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
