Edmonton police are targeting the city's worst 100 drivers.

"We want people to feel safe on their roads and in their city,” Chief Rod Knecht said in a news release.

“Citizens told us in a recent survey that traffic is the number one concern that police should focus on, followed by the other issues of gangs/organized crime, the murder rate, and drugs."

Police will identify a list of “the worst drivers," — drivers with numerous criminal code violations — whose names will not be made public, said EPS spokesperson Chad Orydzuk.

The EPS is assigning officers to four "specialized traffic apprehension teams" which will track down the offending drivers.

The units will also be on the streets around the clock patrolling areas with traffic enforcement concerns, and targeting vehicles and occupants involved in illegal activities, said Knecht.

"They will also be responsible for providing support and intelligence to divisions and specialized investigative units, allowing us to better focus police resources,” he said.

The first unit has recently completed specialized training, while the remaining three squads will be assembled and trained over the next several months.
