Just days after widespread flooding soaked basements and damaged homes, a major rainfall Sunday morning brought more reports of storm damage.

“It’s much worse,” said Sung Yoon, project manager of THS Disaster Services, a company that handles flooding damage.

“We’ve had such a high volume of rain in such a short time. And the ground is so saturated from last week’s flooding.”

Environment Canada says most of central Alberta received between 20 and 30 millimetres of rain overnight.

Yoon says that’s caused more flooding in the city. His company received 200 phone calls Sunday morning reporting flooded basements and sewer problems.

He says that, while restoration companies in the city have been busy, it will take a while before flooding damage is completely repaired.

"This is going to take months, because all we’re doing is emergency [work],” he said.

“It’s going to take months to get these homes back together.... and redo it like it was before.”

Environment Canada predicts the heavy rains will continue throughout Sunday, dumping another 30 to 50 millimetres of rain over most of the Edmonton area before tapering off Monday morning.

Flooding closes highway

The Alberta Motor Assoction says part of Highway 16 between Spruce Grove and Stony Plain has been shut down in both directions due to flooding.

Traffic is being diverted onto Highway 16A and it is not known when the highway will reopen.
