A proposal to build a new LRT stop between the Southgate and Century Park stations was defeated on Monday by the city's transportation committee.

The stop proposed for 40th Avenue and 111th Street was estimated to cost $22 million, a figure some city councillors found hard to stomach.

"I'm a bit appalled we'd be looking at $22 million for something when it's only been open a couple of years," said Coun. Jane Batty.

Her concerns were shared by Coun. Amarjeet Sohi.

"You know we have a limited amount of money for the LRT overall and I think our next priority is southeast and west line," he said.

The new stop was championed by Coun. Don Iveson, whose inquiry in February prompted city administration to prepare a report for Monday's meeting. He was visibly frustrated when his motion to get more information was defeated by other councillors.

"The city does have limited funds and we have great aspirations all over the city," he said afterwards.

"For others, this is seen as a low priority. The problem is you can't city-build if everybody's priorities that aren't in their ward are at the bottom of their list."
