An Edmonton couple accused of starving their 2-year-old twin daughters have been denied bail.
The husband and wife - who face two counts each of aggravated assault, criminal negligence causing bodily harm and failing to provide the necessities of life - sat separated by a wooden barrier in an Edmonton courtroom as Judge Susan Richardson announced her decision Friday afternoon.
In May, paramedics found the couple's severely malnourished twins when they were called to the couple's residence.
One girl weighed 13 pounds and her sister 16 pounds. Police said girls that age should weigh around 26 pounds. Their older brother was found in good health.
Around two dozen people, many of them seemingly friends of the accused, were in the courtroom Friday.
As the judge read the decision, the husband rubbed his forehead and had a look of resignation as he looked back to the couple's supporters.
The parents cannot be named under Alberta law because all three children are now wards of the province.
