Workers at the Hardisty Care Centre walked off the job on May 22. Workers at the Devonshire Care Home have now voted in favour of going on strike. (CBC)
Employees at Devonshire Care Centre have voted overwhelmingly in favour of a strike, according to the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees.
Close to 180 licensed practical nurses, health care aides, dietary, housekeeping and laundry staff work at the southwest Edmonton care centre, which is operated by Vancouver-based Park Place Seniors' Living Inc.
If the workers walk off the job, it will be the fourth labour dispute at an Alberta seniors home in little over a month.
On Tuesday, nearly 90 workers were locked out of Monterey Place, a care home in northeast Calgary, after contract talks broke off.
On June 5th, about 80 licensed practical nurses, health-care aides and support staff went on strike at the Revera Riverbend Retirement Residence in southwest Edmonton.
AUPE members who work at the Hardisty Care Centre, which is also operated by Park Place, walked off the job on May 22.
AUPE says workers at the Devonshire Care Centre are paid up to 30 per cent less than the industry standard and they do not receive benefits that Park Place Seniors Living offers employees in its other facilities in Alberta.
